Is Being an Ethical Episcopalian Enough?

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Sharon Serot Once a month I take my children to a food pantry to do volunteer work. On this particular Sunday we were stocking shelves with a group of Episcopalian Youth. I knew this because each of them was wearing an Episcopal shield lapel pin. Seeing these kids really lifted my spirits. Usually its adults who work in the food pantry and that can become pretty boring for my kids. Now they had the opportunity to work with students their own age. While separating out cans from boxed goods, my son Drew entered into a very interesting conversation with a young man, Henry, who appeared to be about 16 years old. Drew and Henry became fast friends and worked together throughout the morning. When we were finished with our work, we got in the car and on the ride home, he started to share bits and pieces of his morning conversation with Henry. You know, Henry is not so sure if he believes in God, my son informed me. This information kind of caught me off balance. Isnt Henry a member of the Episcopal Youth Group that came to volunteer at the food pantry? I asked confused. Yup, he said, but that really has nothing to do with his volunteering. He does it because he thinks its the right way to do things, he says he does it because he feels its the right thing to do. Now, I believe that part of being a good Episcopalian is being a good person, no question. But thats not the whole ball of wax! There are Christians who claim to be ethical people but who would not necessarily consider themselves to be religious. So my question is, what is their source for goodness? What does an ethical Episcopalian use as the litmus test for good, if not the scriptures? If goodness is defined by the individual, then it follows that morality can also be defined by the individual and thats dangerous. That can lead us down that slippery slope where what I think becomes sacred. Henrys discussion with my son ended up being a real opportunity for our family. It allowed us to explore our own concerns and perceptions on the importance of an ethical framework thats God- based. Imagine how much infinitely deeper Henrys acts of kindness would be if he were sensitized to not only the physical results of his being a good Samaritan, but the spiritual ramifications as well. The Health Benefits of Cottage Cheese

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Mayoor Patel Many people are in search for a healthier body. When it comes to getting healthier, diet is just as important, if not more so, than exercise. The body cannot endure strenuous physical activity without having the proper nutrition. The Food and Drug Administration has developed a food pyramid that can be used to gauge how much of what a person should be eating based on their physical activity. Part of the food pyramid suggests between two and three servings of dairy food a day. Cottage cheese is a healthy way to meet all or part of this daily requirement. Many people avoid dairy foods because they are thought to have a high fat content. While this might be true of some forms of dairy, it is not true of all forms, especially cottage cheese. Cottage cheese in its natural form is low in fat, but is also available in low-fat and non-fat forms. Regular cottage cheese only has 4% of fat by weight, while low-fat has only 2%. It contains protein, calcium, and iron. A half-cup of the cheese has 14 grams of protein. This is about as much as 2 ounces of cooked lean meat, poultry, or fish. The same serving size also has 77 milligrams of calcium. It can be easily eaten for breakfast, the proverbial most important meal of the day. It is important to eat breakfast because it jump starts your metabolism, letting your body know that by lunch time it should be burning food. Skipping breakfast makes you more prone to overeat at lunchtime because by that time you are ravenous. Try having a half-cup of cottage cheese with fruit or whole-grain toast. This will provide you with the energy that is needed until lunch time and keep you from munching on fattier snacks like muffins or donuts. Organizing a School Classroom Party

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Pam Lester Before the party Its always a good idea to talk to the teacher before you start planning your party or purchasing items. You may plan everything ahead of time and then come to find out that a student has an allergy or that certain decorations arent allowed. Here are some good questions to start with: Do any children have food allergies? Usually the teacher will have been notified if any children have food allergies. Are there any decorating restrictions? Most teachers recommend not bringing balloons because of possible safety issues, but if they are allowed they make for quick and easy decorating! How long will I have to set up before the party? The answer to this question is really important. This will determine the type of party that you will have. If you have only a very short time, you will have to limit your decorations and serve easy and quick party foods, etc. Most of the time, the teachers will take the kids outside and allow you about 10-15 min. for setup. This is also a good time to make sure that you will have parent helpers! Do you allow holiday-specific themed parties, or do you prefer general holiday parties? Some schools/teachers prefer to stay away from the specific holiday and steer more towards the general season, so be sure to check with your teacher. Even if they want you to stick with a seasonal theme, youll probably be able to throw in some holiday ideas too. Example: your teacher may want you to stick with a fall theme instead of Halloween, but you will probably be able to put a Ghost Lollipop into their gift bag, etc. Just make sure to check on any restrictions. Are there any food items that arent allowed? Some schools/teachers prefer no soda pop for a party, and sometimes frown on wrapped hard candies so be sure to check if there are any rules/preferences. Are classroom supplies available to use for the party? If you need to use items like glue sticks, tape, or scissors for your party craft dont assume that the teacher will let you use the class supply. Check with her first to see if that is okay if not be sure to bring your own supplies. This question also applies if you want to play music during the party. The teacher may have a CD player in the class, but be sure that you will be able to use it! Even though you are the room rep, you will still need other parents help for the party so be sure to ask for volunteers to bring items, and to help you with the party itself. Be sure to send home reminders! Make a party plan including a schedule of what you want to do. Purchase and prepare all supplies that are needed. If you are doing a craft, I recommend pre-cutting and sorting the supplies into a zip lock bag for each child, and putting a basket with glue/scissors, etc into the middle of each table. It makes it much easier to pass out the craft supplies if they are already prepared in individual baggies! Assemble goodie bags or any take-home gifts ahead of time as well. Use class-parties.com to help plan your event and to gather your food ideas, crafts and party games. Setting up party Try to get to the school a little bit earlier than planned. The parking lot usually fills up fast on party days so the earlier you are the closer you get to park, and that makes a BIG difference when you are lugging all the party stuff around. Party supplies, crafts, food and juice boxes can be heavy and cumbersome so bring along a rolling cart or a wagon to make the trip from the car to the classroom a breeze. Most teachers take their students out of the room during your party set up but be prepared if that doesnt happen. You can bring along themed coloring pages and markers or crayons, or have music or a movie playing. Just be prepared in case! Ask your parent helpers to be there early to help you set up. I recommend passing out all the food and drinks first so when the kids come back in, they can sit down and start eating right away. Set up the rest of your activities and decorations. ***Be sure to make a plate for the teacher!!!*** This should be a relaxing and fun time for the kids and the teacher! During the party Class parties are fun and memorable for kids, so be sure to bring along a camera to catch those memories! The pictures can be shared with the teachers and parents or even put in a school newsletter! Try to find music to go with the party. It really helps set the mood and the kids love it. You can also use the music as a quick back-up game if needed (musical chairs, dance/freeze, etc.) Have a parent helper go around with a trash bag during the party to clean up after the kids, and another parent assigned to help with refills or seconds. The kids should usually eat first, and then play a game (if planned). While the game is going on you can clear the desks for a craft or activity if you have one set up. If you are doing a craft make sure to write the childs name on it so they dont get theirs mixed up with their neighbor. If you want to do two things, but only have time for one activity ( either a craft OR a game, but not both), then you can set up two stations and have the class do the game while the other does the craft; then have them switch. You can find TONS of free crafts and games at www.class-parties.com! You should be the one in charge of how things progress during the party and make sure that things move along. This should be a fun time for the teacher, but if there are discipline problems you should probably refer the student to the teacher and let her take care of the problem. Party getting too loud or out of hand? Bring a book along with you that relates to the holiday or season. Its good to have as a back-up in case your class gets too rowdy. You can call them to sit in a circle and read a quick and interesting story to them. Theyll quiet down pretty quickly, but will still be having fun! Check the reading list on class-parties.com for great book suggestions. Watch that clock! Make sure that you are finishing up on time. Most class parties take place during the end of the school day, so you will need to wrap up the party on time to allow students to get their backpacks ready and lined up for dismissal. After the party Make sure the children have their goody bags and/or take home projects as they leave to go home. Use extra trash bags to pick up all the trash and leftover food. If you have extra un-opened juice boxes save those for the next party. Wipe down desks and tables and clean up the floor, and take down any decorations you brought. The teacher will appreciate it if you put the classroom back the way it was before you got there (maybe a bit cleaner!). Be sure to send thank you notes to the parents who helped during the party! “No” Really Does Mean “No!”

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Kimberly D. King I was in the grocery store last week and within the course of the 30 minutes that it took me to find the four items that I needed and check through the express lane, I experienced 4 children with four different families whaling uncontrollably. I wanted to say something to all of them but the moment was too stressful for all of them so I decided to wait until another time that would be more appropriate. Each one of their children was asking for an item that was not on the list. At first the parent would say “no”. Then the parent would say “no” a little louder. By the time each child’s cries became louder than the screams of the parent, the final answer was “Alright already! I can’t stand it anymore!!” For those of you who can relate to the temper tantrums and the syndrome of saying “No…No…No…Alright already!” here are some pointers to change your life. 1. Set clear expectations BEFORE you go into a store. “We are going to the grocery store and I have a list of just a few items that I need. We are not going to buy any toys or anything that is not on this list. Do you understand?” This is a very important conversation to have in order to set your child’s expectations. When your children know what to expect, they will be less likely to develop hopes for the big stuffed bear in aisle 4. 2. Invite your child to take items from home to the store. My son had a STORE bag that was always packed before we left the house. It contained a juice box, crackers and a few small toys to play with in the carriage. He was always invited to participate in packing this bag so he would like the goodies that were in there. I would set the expectation that I was placing a surprise in the bag that he would be able to get when we got into the store. Sometimes the prize was a special lollipop, a special toy or a new gumball machine toy that he did not know about. This special packing and unpacking time made going to the store a treat instead of a chore. 3. Stick to your guns. Now that you have set the expectations before going into the store, the moment of truth will always arise. “I want that!” usually occurs within 10 minutes of arriving. Calmly state the expectation that you reviewed earlier. “We are only getting what is on this list. Would you like to open your bag and see what your surprise is?” Diverting your child to another topic will get the attention focused to something else. Continue to focus on what your child CAN do. “You can play with the toys in your bag. You can open your lollipop. You can check off the items on the list as I put them in the basket.” This will reinforce to your child that you are not all about saying “no” but that you are focused to following the standards you set before going to the store. 4. Continue to stick to your guns. Allow your child to have a temper tantrum. Do not contribute to the commotion by yelling or losing your control. Continue to support your child’s emotions, but stick to your guns. “I’m sorry that you are so upset. I know you are very angry right now since you are not getting what you want. I would recommend that you play with your toys or eat your snack. We will be finished in just a few minutes.” DO NOT leave the store. You will be setting the expectation that your child is in control and he/she IS NOT the one in control. YOU ARE THE PARENT. By leaving the store you are setting the expectation that anytime your child wants to leave, all that needs to happen is the pitching of a fit. Absolutely not! 5. Praise your child for good behavior. Do not use prizes to reward good behavior. Good behavior is the standard and you do not want to set the expectation that every time your child does not whine that he will be rewarded with a new toy. Use positive verbal reinforcement to praise a job well done. “I really enjoyed going to the store with you today. When you are happy, I am happy too and I really enjoy my time with you. Thank you for focusing on your toys and helping me put our items in the basket. It was really a fun time together!” This allows your child to understand that you appreciate the good behavior but that you are not going to buy things just because there was an absence of tears. 6. Be patient. If you are experiencing temper tantrums and now you decide to change your ways, you will not see results overnight. Your child will be very confused the first time you follow these new guidelines. “What do you mean you’re not going to buy anything when I cry?” “What do you mean I’m not going to get what I want?” It will take a few times of following these new guidelines for them to understand that life is changing. My son was raised with these guidelines so I never experienced any temper tantrums. But the most rewarding day of my life was after I was remarried and my 4 year old step-son (who was not raised this way) had his breakthrough. He looked up into my eyes after he asked for a candy bar for the fourth time and he said, “When you say no, you mean it! You’re not going to change your mind, are you?” I smiled knowingly. I gave him a big hug and said, “No does mean “no”. But “yes” also always means “yes”. He has trusted me every day since that day and knows that I mean what I say and I say what I mean. Financial Advice for Young Married Couples

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Audrey Overman Mention unfaithfulness in a marriage and more then likely your thoughts will focus on sexual relationships. Yet over 50% of divorces are not at all related to sexual unfaithfulness but rather financial unfaithfulness. In today’s debt ridden society, the face of unfaithfulness is financial and divorces are happening much more repeatedly as a result of uncovered financial secrets. More often then not, women are financially unfaithful compared to men however financial unfaithfulness is wide ranging and will annihilate a marriage as quickly as sexual unfaithfulness. Young married couples and debt are common however, they also form a cocktail for marital ruin. Often with a young married couple, one of the partners will hide certain financial things to prevent confrontations and getting help. As soon as the unfaithfulness begins, it usually does not stop until it hits the point of no return. At this point, financial debts become too big to hide and either the partner will reluctantly bring it up or the other partner will discover it on their own, which will bring with it feelings of great frustration, bitterness and often is the beginning of the end for the marriage, especially if professional help is not seeked out immediately. Men seem to be less apt to handle the financial unfaithfulness then women and when it is discovered that their spouse has been financially unfaithful then a battle will often begin. So what is a young married couple to do to avoid this disaster? Be accountable to one another and help each other prepare and maintain a budget. When only one spouse has their hand in control of the cookie jar, temptation can often cause for the hand to dip in more then its fair share. This can often start out innocently but quickly grows into a problem while the other partner sits by innocently unaware of the financial burden that is starting. If a young couple is set on only having one person in control of the budget, that is fine however it is wise to site together once every week and review the income and expenses and allow for open questions and answers. This will provide that additional step of accountability that is often more then enough to keep the temptation of financial unfaithfulness at bay. Marital problems that are caused from a lack of financial maturity do cause many best friends to become bitter enemies and in any marriage, it can certainly be the brutal destruction of the foundation for which it stands. If you are hiding financial problems from your spouse, come clean with them immediately and seek out financial guidance. If you are not sharing the budget responsibly currently, then start. Free Adult Dating Site: Find Out What You Need To Know

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By Anna Dawson Finding the right dating service to post your profile is extremely important, but many people do not want to pay for the service. Fortunately, most free online dating services have almost the same features as the paid ones, so people can get the same benefit without having to pay for anything. However, one of the reasons these free online dating services are not as popular as those that require membership fees is that almost 45% of the single adults who use these dating services are actually looking for serious relationships. Here are some guidelines to remember when looking at free online dating sites. 1. Privacy policy Even a free online dating site has to have its own privacy policy. This means that online dating sites should never sell or use their member’s e-mail address or personal information for anything else. Privacy policies usually are long and full of “legalese,” but make sure you read it before posting anything on an on-line dating site! 2. Background checking It always pays off to do some checking before committing to a certain online dating site. Read not only their promotional success stories on the site, but also search and see what people are saying away from the site. It’s also best to find a site that has a larger membership database. More members means more choices. 3. Extra features Not all free online dating services are created equal. So, even if they are free, some can provide greater features compared to others. 4. Log-in safety measures Even if the site seems okay, remember never to use your real name when creating a user name or use an e-mail address. It is always best to maintain certain level of secrecy for your security. Make sure you do not put any 5. Free trial offers Almost all online dating services offer free trials. The trial membership may be limited in scope, but it wouldn’t hurt to try, just as long as a person observes safety online dating guidelines. After all, there’s nothing to lose because they are free. So, whether or not free online dating services are favorable over paid services, one thing should always be kept in mind: One’s safety should always be on top priority. Never give out your address, meet your date in a neutral location with lots of people, never get into the car with your date, and just practice some common sense. Online dating can be confusing. There are so many options these days and negotiating your way through can be difficult on your own. Telephones - A History - Bell Meets John Henry

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Michael_Russell]Michael Russell In this next part of our series on the history of the telephone we pick up with Bell’s meeting with the director of the Smithsonian Institute, Joseph Henry. Up until March of 1875 Bell and his assistant Thomas Watson continued their work on the harmonic telegraph at the urging of Hubbard and a number of other backers. Bell certainly had plenty of support in his endeavor. In spite of this, in March of 1875 he met with Joseph Henry who was the director of the Smithsonian Institute. Henry listened to what Bell had to say about his idea and gave him some very encouraging words. It was actually Henry’s encouragement that gave Bell the confidence he needed to go on with his experiments. Bell then returned home to Watson and they continued their work. Finally, in June of 1875 a device that could transmit speech electrically was about to be completed and tested. Bell had already proven that different tones, when transmitted, would vary the strength of an electric current in a wire. The only thing they needed to make sure this was successful was to build a working transmitter with a membrane that was capable of varying electric currents and a receiver that would reproduce these varying currents in frequencies that were audible to the human ear. On June 2, 1875, Bell had one of this major breakthroughs and discoveries. He discovered, while experimenting with a technique he called his “harmonic telegraph,” that he could hear sound over a wire when he heard the sound of a clock spring. Bell’s greatest accomplishment wasn’t realized until March 10, 1876, when the telephone itself was born and the multiple telegraph was put to rest for good. Bell’s demonstration of what this device could do, the ability to talk with electricity, was greater than anything that simply increased the capability of a dot and dash system. Thoughts of a multiple telegraph system were totally destroyed. On March 10, 1876, Bell made a notebook entry that describes this most successful moment with the telephone. He picked up the phone and spoke to his assistant Watson with these famous first words, “Mr. Watson — come here — I want to see you” . Bell himself is probably one of the most famous inventors in our history. He was born on March 3, 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was the son and grandson of people who were very knowledgeable about speech, which is probably part of the reason for his interest in this area. He therefore educated himself to pursue a career in this area. His knowledge of sound not only led him to teach the deaf but also to invent the telephone. His knowledge didn’t stop there. Bell’s unstoppable curiosity led him to also invent the photophone, which Bell actually believed to be his most important invention. Unlike the telephone, which used electricity, the photophone used light to transmit messages. Little did anyone know at the time that from these humble beginnings of the telephone, an industry would emerge that would become one of the most important in all of civilization. ——————————————————- Michael Russell Your Independent guide to [http://telephone-guides.com/]Telephones ——————————————————- Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Michael_Russell http://EzineArticles.com/?Telephones—A-History—Bell-Meets-John-Henry&id=171142 get soma online carisoprodol carisoprodol online smtp ru online smtp ru site where to buy soma us licensed pharmacy soma 180 tabs

5 Reasons to Buy and Collect Certified and Graded Coins

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Robert L Taylor Why should a coin collector and investor buy and collect professionally graded and certified coins?. Commonly called slabs, they are housed in a protective plastic holder. There are many companies over a dozen are less than 2 years old which will put your coin in a slab after Certifying that it is Authentic, and assigning a Grade to the coin. The first reason for buying and collecting Certified and Graded Coins applies to all of these companies. However, the most important reasons apply only to the Top Four companies: PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and ICG. Reason No 1. To Protect Your Coin from Damage. Visible Damage, which includes anything from finger prints/oils to being stepped on. More importantly, Environmental Damage, including such things as exposure to the air, or the wrong kind of air, chemicals in the air, and touching other objects (e.g.: certain plastics, liquids, food) and other coins, which will change the appearance and even structure of the coin. Damage causes loss of Value, which means Your Investment. A slab is an air tight container, and its purpose is Protection. Reason No 2. To Establish Authenticity. You want and need to know that your coin is not only the Real thing, but that it has not been altered (changing a mint mark - fraud) or changed, for example by cleaning, polishing, changing the appearance or surface of the coin, in any way that would render your coin unfit to collect. If it is Unfit to Collect, there wont be many Buyers or Sellers. Many coins graded by lesser companies end up getting Rejected by one of the Top Four for these reasons. Reason No 3. To Establish Identity. Is that 1909 Lincoln penny a VDB? Did you overlook the S mint mark. Is it a Type 1 or Type 2? These little identifying marks can mean the difference between a $20 coin and one worth $35,000. We all make mistakes and overlook or miss, mint marks, details, and certain other identifying factors which make up Varities of each coin. It is the professionals duty to look for, and establish these things to determine a coins true Identity. Reason No 4. To Establish the Coins Grade. A coins Grade is what determines its Value. You want Good Value when you Buy the coin. You want to get what you pay for (or more) and not get cheated. When you get ready to Sell or Upgrade, you want to get the most for your coin. You Have to Know What the Coin is Worth! The Grade is always an Issue when Buying and Selling a Collectible Coin. Having the coin Professionally Certified and Graded virtually eliminates this Issue, and the Arguments. This is Your Neutral Third Party. Reason No 5. Trust and Credibility. The Top Four companies are Consistent, Reliable and Trustworthy. They have Established and Respected Reputations. Their Standards are the Highest and the Best. You are taking a Risk when buying a certified and graded coin from any other company. It is possible to buy and sell a coin that is Certified and Graded by one of the Top Four, sight unseen, and know exactly what you are getting. From a description of the coin (e.g.: 1903 O, MS66, NGC, Morgan #034), you know what you are buying, and what to expect. It always helps to have a little description of its appearance, such as white hot or slight reverse toning, since there is one limitation to selling a Certified and Graded coin sight unseen: It is still possible to buy an ugly coin. But that is why we have scanners, fax and email. Therefore, as a Coin Collector and Investor, always collect Certified and Graded coins by one of the Top Four. It is the most reasonable way to verify authenticity and identity of every coin in your collection, as well as to establish a reliable Value. Every source of prices for any coin, be it a yearly book, magazine, a weekly or monthly newsprint; all base their prices on the Grading Standards of the Top Four grading companies, which strictly follow the ANA guidelines. If the Grade of your coin does not measure up to these Standards, then you are only guessing at the Value.
