Homeopathy

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By Craig Burton Homeopathy is one of the most widely used forms of medicine in the world today. (1) How homeopathy works Homeo - same, pathos - suffering Homeopathy takes the principal known as the law of similars or “like cures like” the strategy also behind immunizations. This means that a substance that can cause the disease can also cure it. If coffee leaves one wide awake then a homeopath may use potentised (diluted) coffee or coffea 200C as it’s known to relieve insomnia. (2) Founder of Homeopathy Homeopathy as it is known today was developed over 200 years ago by Samuel Hahnemann, a German doctor and chemist. He believed that “The highest ideal of cure is rapid, gently and permanent restoration of health, or removal and annihilation of the disease in its whole extent, in the shortest, most reliable and most harmless way, on easily comprehensible principles.” (1) How scientific is Homeopathy? According to the majority of modern mainstream medical professionals, homeopathy is long way from being scientific and its effectiveness needs a long stretch of the imagination. However in 1991 the British Medical Journal published an extensive review article by a group of Dutch researchers on the effectiveness of Homeopathy. They reviewed 107 Homeopathy clinical trials that had been published in reputable medical journals. 77 trials showed that Homeopathy worked, so they evaluated the methodology to see how carefully the trials were conducted - expecting to see poorly performed trials. To their surprise they found instead, that the clear majority of those more rigorous trials homeopathy proved to be effective. “Based on the evidence we would be ready to accept that homeopathy can be efficacious, if only the mechanism of action were more plausible” (2) How are Homeopathic remedies prepared? Remedies are derived from plant, mineral, or animal substances. The remedy begins as a liquid solution taken through a series of dilution steps involving shaking or succession to potentise it. It then turns into a tiny sugar tasting ball that you dissolve in the mouth, which is a good reason for scepticism as it tastes too good to be medicine. Where can I find out more? In the UK I recommend contacting the Alliance of Registered Homeopaths at www.a-r-h.org for a registered practitioner. If you are on a budget and curious there are also discounted clinics offered by final year students under the eyes of supervisors. Alternatively most countries have a registered body that can be found through a google search. What is a Scientologist?

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

By Michael J Moore The Religious Technology Center (RTC), holder of various copyrights and trademarks of the Church of Scientology it seems are attempting to monopolize the word and restrict its use to those people whom they consider are in good standing as members of the officially registered Church of Scientology and that anyone who is not considered by that same church as in good standing with them, regardless of the reason why, cannot call themselves a scientologist. Although they do NOT hold a trademark or copyright over the use of the word, this does not stop them attempting to blur the issue and give the apparency that the word is copyright, they call it a ‘collective mark’. A dubious term at best and an outright lie at worst. Of course one could ask the question, why would anyone want to call themselves a scientologists? Perhaps for the same reason that a Christian calls themselves a Christian or a Muslim calls themselves a Muslim or a Hindi calls themselves a Hindi or a Buddhist calls themselves a Buddhist. Because they chose to announce their faith by demonstrating what they believe in to the world. It requires no copyright, trademark or thou shalt not call oneself a scientologist unless we say you can It has nothing to do with any particular orthodox church. Indeed, there are established Jewish people by birth or religion that call themselves Jewish yet are not a member of any orthodox Jewishorder. To call oneself an Orthodox Jew may require one to participate in the practices of the orthodox Jewish order. There is also the reform Jewish Church or movement. The Orthodox does not bring legal proceedings against the reform church because they call themselves Jewish. Perhaps we should call ourselves reform scientologists? In most of the countries of the world a person is entitled to call themselves whatever they wish in relation to their beliefs. And publicly state so as well. Now the scientology religion has an orthodox, if you will, church. This was set up by L Ron Hubbard, the founder in order to effectively disseminate the technology and philosophy he developed. He pointed out, on several occasions and in many written issues, that in order to achieve the results of applying the technology he developed, it needs to be understood fully and applied in the exact manner he prescribed. Part of ensuring this was done was the establishment of a church to act as a custodian for the technology so that it was not altered or perverted resulting in less or no results through misunderstanding and misapplication. Unfortunately, since the demise of Ron Hubbard, changes to the technology and the application have been made that violate this principle. Some of these may be found documented at http://scientologistsfreezone.com. In fact it is said now that the orthodox church intends to rewrite all of L. Ron Hubbards work, including the original Dianetics: the Modern Science of Mental Health on the basis that the public are too uneducated to understand it. This, if true, would be a radical and major departure from the ‘original scriptures’, as the church likes to call them in court. So what philosophy is the church protecting? At this point a very brief summary of the structure of the church would be beneficial. A the top of the lucrative fiscal food chain you have Church of Spiritual Technology (CST). Contrary to the name this is not a church but a privately owned corporation. Corp Id Number: C1074287Date of Incorporation: 5/28/1982Registered Name:CHURCH OF SPIRITUAL TECHNOLOGY419 N LARCHMOUNT BLVD #86LOS ANGELES, CA 90004Agent for Service of Process:SHERMAN LENSKE6400 CANOGA AVE STE 315WOODLAND HILLS, CA 91367 The CST owns the Religious Technology Center (RTC), another privately owed business, which owns some trademarks and copyrights somehow acquired at or around the death of the Founder L. Ron Hubbard. They license these trademarks and copyrights to the Church of Scientology international who have first rights to the use of the trademarks and copyrights but legally and, if felt so disposed, could rescind this license at anytime. So the Church of Scientology does not actually own the copyrights or trademarks it uses, but pays a private company for the right to use them. This amounts to millions of dollars per year. Being a private company no financial statements or balance sheets are issued by the CST at any time. The directors are, for the most part, NOT scientologists. Their directors fees are not disclosed and the use of the many millions of dollars obtained is not disclosed either. Interesting! But what has this to do with the attempt to monopolies the word scientologist you may ask? There are many people outside of the church who have either been booted out or have no wish to belong to the official church. In fact almost ALL of the original experienced scientologists who assisted Ron Hubbard to in building up the church and the Saint Hill organizations to their, now former glory, have all been excommunicated or, in church parlance, declared. However that does not immediately mean they are no longer scientologists. Just no longer members of the official church. The two states are not synonymous, or in scientological terms, not an A=A=A. (anything equals anything equals anything. A lack of distinction between things or people. e.g “all women are bad”. Patently incorrect and an example of the A=A=A principle) The definition of a scientologist as per the published works of Ron Hubbard, as written by the originator of the philosophy and technology himself specifically in the book, “The Dianetics and Scientology Technical Dictionary” by L. Ron Hubbard, published by Author Services, a name by which the RTC goes by, states: SCIENTOLOGIST, 1. one who betters the conditions of himself and the conditions of others by using scientology technology. 2. one who controls persons, environments and situations. A Scientologist operates within the boundaries of the Auditor’s Code and the Code of a Scientologist. 3. one who understands life. His technical skill is devoted to the resolution of the problems of life. 4. a specialist in spiritual and human affairs. Looking very carefully I do not see it mentioned anywhere in that officially approved definition, that one is obliged to be an officially approved member of the Church of Scientology. The word scientology itself does not mean, that which is owned by the Church of Scientology and that which can only be practiced by the church known as the Church of Scientology. Indeed in that very same dictionary the word is defined as , “a science of life. It is the one thing senior to life because it handles all the factors of life. It contains the data necessary to live as a free being. A reality in Scientology is a reality on life.” Indeed there is probably legal cause to object to the registration of the words ‘Scientology’, ‘Hubbard’ and ‘L. Ron Hubbard’, as a generic name for a religion (which the church was keen to have established by the High Court in the USA) interestingly enough, and respectively the names L. Ron Hubbard and Hubbard are the name of an individual. And as Ron Hubbard himself pointed out on more than one occasion, “I know no man who has any monopoly upon the wisdom of this universe. It belongs to those who can use it to help themselves and others.” and “People look on this as being ‘my science’. Yeah, I own all of your postulates. I bought them one day at a raffle. Like the devil I did! About the only thing, as I told you the other day, that I have done is organize and put together, and maybe I can look a little bit better than anybody else has been looking for a long time, and so I can see it. But if you can see it, well, so help me Pete, it’s yours. Got that?” From LRH tape lecture 1MACC-26 of 25 Nov 59, titled “Individuation”. Presuming that the RTC agree with the tenets of L. Ron Hubbard, who founded the very groups which comprise the Church of Scientology, then the Creed of the Church of Scientology should also be studiously followed, and I quote. “We of the Church believe: That all men have inalienable rights to their own religious practicesand their performance. That all men have inalienable rights to conceive, choose, assist andsupport their own organizations, churches and governments. And that no agency less than God has the power to suspend or set asidethese rights overtly or covertly.” Of course, If the CST, the RTC and the Church of Scientology do not agree with the Creed of the Church of Scientology, or the definition of a scientologist as given in the church official list of definitions by virtue of their propensity to engage in legal frivolous suits, then of course, apart from being a church that does not follow its own precepts, it could be questioned on its stated motives for applying legal pressure for the protection of the trademark and copyrights that it does. The copyright and trademark laws were set up for the protection of financial interests of business and corporations and it is possible that the RTC and their responsible body of directors, The CST, could conceivably be held liable for the possible accusation of misuse of copyright and trademark laws and perverting the use of the legal system. Now that would be an interesting scenario! Of course no individual has the monopoly on the spiritual freedom of man. Anyone who deigned to consider themselves a god above all man and to maintain a tight grip on the only key to mans spiritual freedom, paid for and released only through exorbitant financial payments, is eventually going to go the way all past religions and organizations have gone which have attempted to monopolize freedom, and will incur the same derision by man that has been incurred before. Anyone who has made a serious study of the Koran and believes and follows the traditions of the Moslem faith is entitled to call themselves a Muslim. Anyone who has studiously studied the Bible and believes in Christ and what he stands for is entitled to call themselves a Christian. Anyone who has similarly made a study of scientology and follows and applies the traditions and practices thereof is also entitled to call themselves a scientologist. None of them are obliged by law to ‘belong’ to or be subservient to any official church. Any attempt therefore to reduce ones inalienable right to their religious practice and their performance of scientology would be, at the very least, to any ethical and moral scientologist, a distasteful act, certainly not in the spirit of spiritual freedom which Ron Hubbard intended for the church or even for the spiritual freedom of this planet. There is also the question of course as to whether it is actually legal to do so constitutionally. The majority of the original scientologists who assisted Ron Hubbard in building up the Church have been ousted since his death. Even his late wife, a tireless supporter and major assistant in developing the technology, is persona non gratia. One wonders, if Ron Hubbard were alive now, whether he would be ousted as a heretic and persona non gratia along with his original adherents. Fortunately, the International Freezone Association, along with many other free organizations, are not cowed or bound under the new regime of the official Church of Scientology. They stand upright and practice their right to call themselves whatever they wish. They believe they are entitled to call themselves scientologists. Independent scientologists. In the original meaning of the term, as per the definition cited above. And are proud to do so. They also believe: That a scientologist is one who betters the conditions of himself and the conditions of others by using scientology technology. That a scientologist is a person, whether an accepted member of the ‘official’ church or not, who practices and uses the philosophy and technology of scientology to the best of their ability. That a scientologist is one who understands life. His technical skill is devoted to the resolution of the problems of life That a scientologist is a specialist in spiritual and human affairs. And that lastly, a scientologist is not one who lives in fear of ‘what the church may do’. Mans spiritual freedom does not depend upon one man’s whim or a private organizations obsession for protecting financially lucrative copyrights and trademarks as being more important that mans spiritual freedom. That way spiritual freedom will simply go down the tubes. Mans spiritual freedom depends upon that individual who will stand up for his or her rights and be the scientologist of which Ron would be proud. Relationships: Giving to Get

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By Margaret Paul, Ph.D. Are you giving love to your partner for the joy of giving, or are you giving to get love? I received the following email on this topic, asking for my help: Hi, my name is Adam. I am living with my parents and Im thinking of moving out with my girlfriend Patty. But there are some things that make me feel upset, and I dont really know what to do. I love her but she doesnt seem to be the person she was. At times she feels bad and upset. These periods last for about 4 - 5 days. During these times she seems more distant and our sex life just stops. This makes me frustrated because for the past year I have been working so hard to try and make her feel better when she feels bad. I thought that it was working but now it seems nothing I do works. I miss the old times because she kissed me randomly all day and it made me feel so loved and wanted. She would hold me, and tell me great things. It was like a fantasy. Now, Im lucky if she kisses me at least once in about 3 hours. I actually start all of the kissing. I start all of the holding. It feels like I have to start everything. Mainly at times it feels like she just wants me as a friend. She doesnt make me feel loved or wanted. My feelings about this come and go mainly around the times when she feels bad. But these feelings also come around sometimes when she is not feeling bad. I just dont have a clue what to do, and I need some help. Adam is giving to get. He wants control over getting Patty to validate his worth and fill him up. He is fine as long as Patty is having sex with him and kissing him a lot and making him feel loved and wanted. But, because Adam is not doing anything to make himself feel loved and wanted, he is addicted to Patty doing this. He is not giving his love to Patty from a full place inside, a place inside filled with love. Instead, he is empty inside and hopes that if he works hard and is nice to Patty, he can have control over getting her to fill his empty hole. As a result, Patty feels pulled on to take responsibility for Adams wellbeing, and becomes upset and distant in the face of the pull. She is getting turned off to Adam and just wants him as a friend because his neediness is not attractive to her. When sex is a way for Adam to get validated - rather than an expression of his love - Patty will feel used rather than loved. when they have sex. Nothing will change in this relationship until Adam decides to learn how to take responsibility for his own good feelings rather than expect Patty to do it for him. Patty wants him to come to her as a powerful and secure man, not as a needy little boy needing her constant kisses to feel okay about himself. Adam needs to take his eyes off how Patty is treating him and instead focus on how he is treating himself and Patty. He needs to open to learning about what he is telling himself and how he is treating himself that is causing his emptiness and neediness. He needs to stop being a victim of Pattys behavior and instead focus within on what he needs to do for himself, for the little boy within him that wants love and attention. He would have love to share with Patty if he were to focus on giving himself love and attention and on making himself happy, instead of trying to make Patty happy in the hopes that she will make him happy. As it is, he is just trying to get love - giving to get. Adam is coming from a very common false belief that our best feelings come from being loved and desired. The truth is that our best feelings come from being loving to ourselves and to others. Adam wont know this until he decides to change his intention from trying to have control over getting love to learning about being loving. The Problem With The Middle East

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By Anthony Smith The Problem with the Middle East. As this world seeks peace, we see a change in the worlds perception of only one country, Israel. Israel is a thorn in the side of all Middle Easter Nations. The problems in the area are not connected to Israel but are rather a problem of greed and religion, power and submission, control and conquest. These are nations that are caught up in the most interesting aspect of Biblical prophecy concerning the region and of Israel. Israeli-Palestinian peace talks foundered in mid-2000, just before the start of a Palestinian uprising. Israeli negotiations with arch-foe Syria collapsed in early 2000. Israel’s prime minister on Thursday said it was wrong to link the Arab-Israeli conflict with woes in the Middle East and ruled out any immediate talks with Syria. (Reuters, BBC. AFP.) Luke 21:20 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh. Do you who say,I am Religious and I am of God, bridal your own tung? Do you make great speeches with great swelling words of prosperity and possession? Do you render fine stories that not only a child believes but also the elder, who is not learned in the true words of God? Do you prophecy without the direction of God, but use the words of humans? Do you that kindle a fire, expect not to be burnt? Isa 50:11 Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow. Do you that sow discord reap fine flower? Isa 34:6 -10; The sword of the LORD is filled with blood, it is made fat with fatness, and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams: for the LORD hath a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Idumea. And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the bulls; and their land shall be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness. For it is the day of the LORD’S vengeance, and the year of recompenses for the controversy of Zion. Who is fighting over the land of God without respect to the will of Him that created it? Mankind does not own this earth, we are but sojourners here, in a strange land, in a time of Gods choosing. You fight and war and cannot win, for you fight against God. For the day of the LORD’S vengeance is upon you and none can hide. None can hide their iniquity and none can hide their hatred for the Chosen of God. Your Kings and Princes, your Priest and Scribes will be as nothing before the Almighty, for you have turned your backs and become gainsayers and back sliders, going after strange and seducing spirits. And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the dust thereof into brimstone, and the land thereof shall become burning pitch. This land that you lust after will be turned to ruble, the trees will be on fire, the dust will not be kind nor pleasant to you. The sky will darken and the moon will not give her light for she will be as the blood that you have spill. The earth drinks up the blood of the innocent and crys out with the pain and sorrows of many. Shall these types of people enter into Gods rest? Shall they enter into the Kingdom of Heaven? It shall not be quenched night nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up for ever: from generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it for ever and ever. The problems in the Middle East cannot be cured by political means for it is not in the power of any to create a lasting peace, though the Bible tells us that Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.This peace the Bible speaks of are in the nature of the short term peace, peace between man and woman, man and man, Nation to Nation, etc. Psa 17:9 From the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who compass me about. Those that compass about Israel will be eventually destroyed with fire and great blood loss. This is the Kingdom on Earth that God has ordained for the cite of the Throne that Jesus will sit upon and rule the nations with a rod of Iron. Rev 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. Rev 2:26-29; And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. And I will give him the morning star. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. He that hath an ear, let him hear, Let him hear of the truth of God, let him hear the truth of Jesus, let him hear the truth and be of a single mind that will make his choice. If your religion is strong enough it will stand if not it will fall, for there will be only One leader, One Christ and only One God that will rule this earth. Try God and see if He will not deliver you from your bondage of fear and deception. Rev 22:10-16; And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand. He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. ars. Mommy, When I Grow Up I Wanna Be a Couch Potato…Just Like You!

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By Katherine Westphal No one really dreams of wasting their life in front of the TV. That goal ranks up there with becoming a professional burger flipper or french fry specialist. Yet, the AVERAGE American spends 4 hours each and every day in front of the TV. That makes the AVERAGE American a part-time couch potato, clocking in 28 hours per week. Is that really the American dream now? Are you watching TV instead of pursuing your dreams? If so, what message might that you be sending to your children? Would you rather be a living embodiment of someone who pursues their dreams, or an embodiment of couch potato-hood? What messages does watching TV send to our kids? First, there are all the messages the TV itself sends out: all the sex, violence, and other messages depending on the shows that your family watches. By watching these shows we legitimize the messages contained within them. Second, there is the message we send by our example. We demonstrate to our kids how to interact with the world when we are watching TV, especially when we do it for four hours a day. We are passive. We hypnotically accept most of what is presented. We are isolated from the world. We do not actively engage the world. Time wise, we also show our kids that TV is the most important thing in life after sleep and work. Third, there is the message we send out by omission. We demonstrate everything else that we are not doing when we watch TV. We are NOT showing by example how to take care of responsibilities. Our minds are NOT focused on reality. We are NOT physically active. We are NOT pursuing our dreams. We are sending the message to our children that watching TV is more important than pursuing our dreams. The average American child may be surprised to find their parents have dreams beyond Monday Night Football. What are your dreams? In order to set a good example of following your dreams, you may wish to consider strictly limiting or eliminating TV from your life. When people are involved in pursuing their dreams they often find that they do not have the time to watch TV. TV just gets in the way of pursuing other dreams. Although you won’t magically have your dreams materialize, once you get control over–or get rid of–your TV, you may find that you may have the time to pursue your other dreams. You will have time to build a happy family and an exciting marriage. You will have time to pursue the health and body you desire. You will have time to build communities with your neighbors. You will have time to play an active role in your church or religious institution. You will have time to play an active role in social or political groups. You will have time to do charity work. You will have time to start your own business. Whatever your dreams are, you will have the time to pursue them. Just Imagine… What would happen if all Americans threw their televisions out their windows today and started pursuing their dreams? What if the entrepreneurs focused their energy on building their businesses? What if all the moms and dads in this country started devoting more of their time to building the type of family they had always dreamed of having. What if communities came together to pursue their common dreams. It could literally change the world. Or we Americans could go on as we are now, passively letting our dreams pass us by, stuck in a hypnotic daze in front of the TV. Turn OFF your TV and follow your dreams! Katherine Westphal is the founder of a daring new website Trash Your TV!, that makes it fun and easy for people to get control of their TV set. Are you addicted to TV? A Brief History of Plastic Surgery

Friday, October 26th, 2007

By Jeanette Pollock The word “plastic” has come to mean “artificial” to people in our society today, but that’s not where plastic surgery gets its name. The “plastic” in plastic surgery derives from “plastikos,” a Greek word that means “to mold or shape.” Although we tend to think of cosmetic surgery when someone mentions plastic surgery, plastic surgeons have a long history of performing physical reconstruction. Skin grafts, which are a form of plastic surgery, were performed in India as long ago as 800 B.C. By the fourth century A.D., surgeons in Byzantium had developed fairly sophisticated methods of fine suturing to prevent scarring. More significant reconstruction became part of the plastic surgery universe in the 18th century, when an American surgeon repaired a cleft palate, and in the 19th century the development of general anesthesia for surgery helped make plastic surgery more widely acceptable once people realized they no longer had to be wide awake to experience pain. Surgery in general became more commonplace as antibiotics and an understanding of the importance of modern sanitary measures made all forms of surgery less dangerous. World War I, which maimed thousands of soldiers, was the crucible in which many plastic surgery specialists were formed. Doctors developed methods for reconstructing ears, noses, jaws and eyes, and compared notes across national boundaries after the war. New techniques and materials are continually being developed in plastic surgery that can repair an ever-wider range of physical deformities, and many that make cosmetic surgery procedures easier, more comfortable, and more affordable than ever before. 10 Top Tips For Melt And Pour Soap Making

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Jennifer Christine Making soap can be a fun hobby. You also have the pride and satisfaction of making your own soap, controlling exactly whats in it and wowing your friends and family with your hand made soap creations. The melt and pour process is an easy way to make your own soap. Melt and pour soap comes in ready made blocks of uncolored and unscented soap. Basically, you melt the blocks, add your own color, fragrance, fun additives (optional) and pour it into molds. Once its set, its ready to use! Here are ten top tips for melt and pour soap making: 1. Use a good recipe. Even though its easy to make soap this way, you still need a recipe to ensure the color, fragrance and optional additives are in the right amounts. 2. Make sure you wear the appropriate safety equipment. I like to wear protective clothing, shoes, gloves and safety goggles. Melted soap is very hot! You dont want to get burned if you accidentally splash yourself. 3. You need suitable soap making equipment. You can melt the block of soap in the microwave, but you need a sturdy microwave safe bowl or jug for doing this. If melting on the stove, you need a double boiler. You also need rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle, measuring spoons and a metal whisk or spoon. 4. Ensure you make soap in a well ventilated area (eg, with window/s open). 5. Dont be disturbed by children or pets when making soap. You dont want them (or you) to be accidentally splashed, which can happen when youre distracted by an interruption. 6. Ensure youre using a good quality melt and pour soap base with colors and fragrances suitable for soap making. 7. Have fun choosing the molds youre going to use. Oil Finishes - Tips For Creating The Perfect Finish on Your Woodturnings

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By Steven Russell Overview Oil finishes are considered by many turners to be the ultimate woodturning finish. Among the easiest of all finishes to apply, oil finishes impart a close to the wood feeling that begs to be touched. In my woodturning demonstrations around the United States and in discussions with other turners via the Internet, no other subject has spawned more questions than finishing. In days long past, finishing was considered an art form - in and of itself, with the procedures and formulas jealously guarded by craft guilds. Today, few wood turners handcraft their own finishes from scratch. Literally hundreds of professionally formulated finishes are easily available, delivering varying levels of protection and lustre. However, some turners still prefer handcrafting their own signature finishes, achieving results that rival any commercial finish. Next to wax, oil finishes are the easiest of all finishes to apply. However, there is more to applying an oil finish than simply wiping it on and off. Oil finishes are a very popular finish for many woodturnings however, few oil finish products are specifically made for woodturnings. Therefore, much of the application information has been designed with traditional furniture finishing in mind. While some of the procedures for applying an oil finish to a woodturning or a piece of furniture may be the same, others are not. As wood turners, we are fortunate to be able to use our lathes in conjunction with our finishing endeavors. This is a significant advantage over the traditional finishing of cabinet, or furniture case goods. The lathe can easily transform laborious and tedious activities into relatively quick and simple procedures. Tips On Achieving A Perfect Oil FinishOil finishes tend to magnify any damaged areas on the underlying wood surface. Therefore, your surface must not contain bruised or torn grain areas, or they will appear much darker than the undamaged wood when the finish is applied. Sand the surface of the wood to at least 600-grit metric. If your turning is a gallery quality piece, sand to 2,000grit metric or higher. After each grit change, reverse your lathe and sand in the opposite direction. When you have completed sanding with your final grit, lightly wet the surface of the wood to raise the grain. When dry, re-sand to remove any raised grain fibers. Remove any accumulated sanding dust or grit lodged in the pores with compressed air, or a tack rag before applying your finish. To insure that the surface contains no defects, wipe on a thin coat of Odorless Mineral Spirits and closely examine the surface. Damaged areas will appear darker than the surrounding wood. If you find an area that needs attention, re-sand and prepare the surface for finishing as stated above. Applying The Finish Apply the initial coat of finish to the surface to the wood by flooding it on with a folded paper towel. Keep working the oil into the surface for 3-5 minutes. Pay close attention to any areas that absorb more finish and appear dry, or dull and apply more finish to these areas. Reapply the finish as necessary to insure that the surface stays wet during the rub-in process. If you are using a polymerised oil finish, the application time will be significantly less than with a traditional penetrating oil finish. When your initial rub-in is completed, use two pieces of clean paper towel, one in each hand, to remove any excess finish. Pay particular attention to accumulated oil in detail areas like textures, or beads. A short blast of compressed air in these areas will assist in removal of any excess finish. Watch for possible bleed-out of the finish from the wood pores and remove any that appears before it cures. Some woods with large pores are very prone to bleed-out such as Oaks, Walnut and Ash. Depending on the particular species and amount of finish applied, this bleed-out may occur for up to four hours or more after application of the finish coat. Before applying the second and subsequent coats of finish, lightly sand the surface with the fine grit of sandpaper or synthetic wire wool. Some turners prefer to wet sand at this point, especially when working past 1200-grit. Buffing The Cured Finish When you have applied your last coat of finish, allow the surface to fully cure before buffing. Once the finish has cured, you can use a cutting compound on a rotary buffing head, or proceed directly to a cloth buffing wheel to smooth and perfect the surface finish. If you will be buffing the piece, you can charge your wheel with Tripoli or White Diamond compound to increase the effectiveness of the buff. Most oil finishes also respond well to dry buffing with plain cotton, or flannel wheels. The speed at which to buff depends on several factors including the specific finish used, compound used if any on the buffing wheel and the structure of the buffing wheel. If you are a new to buffing oil finishes, set your lathe to 1,750 RPM’s. If this proves inefficient, gradually increase the speed of your lathe, or the buffing wheel until the buff cuts the surface of the finish effectively. Although oil finishes may require several applications to achieve a sufficient build, the resulting surface can be provocative and visually spectacular. Through the years at gallery showings and art shows that I have participated in, the pieces that were finished with oils were always among the most popular with visitors to my booth. There is something about the feel of a finely buffed oil finish that is quite, irresistible. About The Author Steven Russell is a professional artist, demonstrator and writer. 6 MUST Have Strategies To Make Big Bucks with Big Ticket Items

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

By Chuck Daniel Strategy #1: Change Your Mindset That’s right, change your mindset! It’s probably the number one most important strategy when selling Big Ticket Items. Plenty of people are uncomfortable selling items that are priced above the $500 - $1000 mark. It’s the intangibles which make Big Ticket marketing tougher to come to grips with for many business people. They have questions like: Will my customers accept a product priced this high? How can I put a value on information? Who’s going to buy an island for one million dollars? It’s a lot easier to value a low ticket item like an E-book at $17 or $49 or $197. There are already books available that have prices in a similar range. So how do you start the switch in mindset? The best thing to do is to find a Big Ticket product that you believe in and just try marketing it to your list of customers! That’s what Joel Christopher did. He wanted to attend a particular seminar but it cost $1000. In those days, that was a lot of money for Joel. But the organizer told him that if he sold 3 seats he could get in free and earn affiliate commissions on every seat sold. Now, Joel wasn’t sure whether his existing list would accept a Big Ticket Item at that price. But he decided to go for it! He wrote up an email and sent it out. And, much to his surprise, he sold 2 seats in less than 2 days! And that was a key turning point for Joel. His mindset was shifted. But how did Joel get up the nerve to send out that Big Ticket email to his list? We’re going to talk about that in Strategy #2. Strategy #2: It’s All About Value It is crucial that you value and believe in all of the products and services you sell. And that includes all lead generation products and services, as well. You must always provide huge value for your customers or they won’t be your customers for long. By providing such value, you are successfully able to market to your customers. But this is especially important when selling Big Ticket items because it relates to your mindset. Here are a couple of quotes about marketing Big Ticket Items: Ted Nicholas: “You need to be able to basically establish the value in your mind before you can establish the value in the mind of the prospect.” Joel Christopher: “Now deep inside, it was really about the value I was giving. When I said, I value what I’m giving and I value this thing then I can really promote it to my list.” In the first quote, Ted is just saying that you need to have a firm idea of the value of the product you are marketing before you can put a price tag on it and convince a prospect that it is worth that price. In the second quote, Joel is describing the process that he had to go through internally, establishing the value of the product to himself and also its benefit to his list, before promoting it to his list. Strategy #3: Have a Marketing Plan Jay Conrad Levinson calls the Marketing Plan, the first marketing weapon. Jay is the father of Guerrilla Marketing and he says: “And in guerrilla marketing, if you don’t have a marketing plan, that’s like entering a battle under a commander who says, Ready, Fire, Aim!’ You’re not going to win any battles if you do that.” Now, I am not talking about a 300 page document that puts your team members to sleep J No, I am talking about a very simple marketing plan that helps guide every decision that you make for your business. As Jay Conrad Levinson describes it, a guerrilla marketing plan is only 7 sentences long and can be created in under 5 minutes. This article is too short to give a detailed description of a guerrilla marketing plan so we’ll quickly highlight it and give you some resources for further reading. Sentence 1: What is the purpose of your marketing? What specific action do you want people to take? E.g. Do you want them to visit your website or join your mailing list? Sentence 2: How are you going to achieve that purpose? You do this by stressing your benefits and competitive advantages. Sentence 3: Who is your target audience or audiences? Who wants your product? Sentence 4: What is your niche in the marketplace; what you stand for? When people hear the name of your business, what’s the first thing that enters their mind? Sentence 5: Which marketing weapons will you use? Guerrilla marketing has over 100 to choose from. E.g. marketing plan and marketing calendar. Check out http://www.gmarketingcoach.com/weapons.htm for the complete list of marketing weapons. Sentence 6: What is your identity? Which means your company personality. And it tells the truth. An image tells a lie; an identity tells the truth. Every business has a personality. Sentence 7: What is your marketing budget? It should be expressed as a percentage of your projected gross sales. And that’s it, a marketing plan that is concise and focused. Make sure you check out the following resources as well: “Bigwig Briefs: Guerrilla Marketing - The Best of Guerrilla Marketing & Marketing on a Shoestring Budget by Jay Conrad Levinson” “The One Page Business Plan with CD ROM by Jim Horan” The second book isn’t Guerrilla marketing but the planning is very similar. It also has some easy templates you can use. You can find links to these resources and many others by checking out the sites in the resource area below. Strategy #4: Have A Marketing Calendar Jay Conrad Levinson calls the Marketing Calendar, the second marketing weapon. The marketing calendar does not have to be a time consuming task. You can do the rough outline of a simple one in 5-10 minutes or you can do a really detailed year by week calendar in about 2-3 weeks. Here’s how to create a simple marketing calendar: Create a table with 12 rows and 5 columns. The 1st column is Month, the 2nd column is Thrust, the 3rd column is Media, the 4th column is Marketing Cost ($) and the 5th column is Grade. For each of the 12 rows, fill in one month (e.g. Jan, Feb, Mar, etc.) in the Month Column. Now for each row, fill in the thrust of your marketing in the Thrust column. In other words, for each month you should have a particular thrust for your marketing. (e.g. a special event, a special price, a new service, etc.) Now for the Media column, fill in the media you plan to use during a particular month. (e.g. email, newspaper, radio, TV, networking, etc.) In the Marketing Cost ($) column, you will fill in how much money it cost you to do your marketing for that month. And finally, in the Grade column, you give a letter grade (A, B, C, D, E, F) about how well you thought your marketing did that month. Be honest! Now, at the end of the year you simply look back over your marketing calendar. Compare your monthly financial statements with the marketing activities for that month and see which activities really paid off for you. Eliminate any marketing activities that did not receive an A or B grade. Use only those A and B grade activities for planning the following year’s activities. After the second year, repeat the above process again, except only keep marketing activities that had a grade of A. All you’re left with are things that have been proven in action for your business. Now isn’t that worth the small amount of up front effort to create the marketing calendar? Strategy #5: Multimedia Marketing Single media marketing is not sufficient! You cannot reach all the prospects for your products and services through a single media anymore. Take email for example. But first, a brief side note. Your marketing email message should NEVER be SPAM; it should always be permission based email. In other words, the people you’re sending it to should have opted in to receive it. Anyway, with the ever increasing amount of SPAM and people using SPAM filters to try to help that problem, your marketing message in email might not even be making it through to your prospective customer! Or your customer may be overwhelmed by the sheer number of email messages they receive and will not even get around to reading your Sales Letter, E-Course, Article, or Newsletter. TV and Radio. How many customers just ignore your message because they use VCR’s or DVD recorders to tape only the shows they want to watch AND then they speed through the advertisements. And TV and Radio ads are notoriously hard to track in terms of their effectiveness. Infomercials at least use specific 800 numbers that can be changed for each marketing campaign to track how well they are pulling in sales. But how do you gauge whether a 30 second ad spot on TV is working? Here’s what Jay Conrad Levinson, the father of Guerrilla Marketing had to say about multimedia marketing: “Guerrillas know that the only thing that works now is marketing combinations. If you do advertising and you do direct mail and you have a website, all three will work. All three will help each other work. The days of single weapon marketing have been relegated to the past and we’re now living in an era where only marketing combinations work.” And here is what Joel Christopher, the master list builder, had to say about multimedia marketing: “Multimedia marketing is the next principle. See, another myth that I saw happening was that internet marketing is the end all and be all and nothing else. … you can generate leads and do email marketing, but for High Ticket Items, the sale is done offline. So you have to combine online marketing with offline marketing.” An excellent resource on multi-media marketing: “Mining Online Gold with an Offline Shovel by Joel Christopher and George McKenzie” You can find links to this resource and many others by checking out the sites in the resource area below. Strategy #6: Build Long Term Relationships Building relationships isn’t a new marketing concept. You must build relationships with your customers. In order for them to buy from you, they must come to know you and trust you. Only then, will they buy from you. But once they buy, most of them will be your customers for life as long as you treat them well. In the field of Customer Relationship Management (CRM), building relationships has taken on even more importance over the last few years. It used to be that CRM was nothing more than a new buzzword for sales force automation (software to make the taking of orders easier for sales representatives). There was no “C” or “R” involved, only “M” for management of sales. But, people in the CRM field learned that in order to maximize profit you must first maximize customer lifetime value. And the way that you do that is by building long term relationships with customers! This becomes particularly important in Big Ticket businesses with extremely long sales cycles. E.g. Mainframe or super computers E.g. Jet or 747 airplanes. You cannot just hit these prospects with a “buy, buy, buy” sales message. You need to build a relationship with them. Their order could be worth $500,000 to $1,000,000 or more. They are not going to trust you with that size of an order without getting to know you much better, first! Jay Conrad Levinson says: “… traditional marketing is all about taking. How much can we get from each customer? Let’s go get it. Guerrilla marketing is all about giving. Guerrillas realize that marketing’s real purpose on earth is to educate people how to succeed at achieving their goals.” Copyright (C) 2005 Chuck Daniel, Like Magic Marketing, LLC - All Rights Reserved. Fair Or Fraudulent? Reasons Why A Non Exclusive Dating Strategy Could Help You Find True Love

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

By Cheryl Ashbrook Some dating experts recommend dating more than one guy at a time in the early stages of dating. This concept is often quite alien to us girls as we have been bought up to believe in fidelity, and dating multiple guys at the same time seems wrong somehow. But there are good reasons for trying this technique. Imagine that you have met someone you really, really like. In typical romantic style you may spend your spare time daydreaming about him, maybe even try combining his name and yours etc. etc. Sound familiar? Even in these days where we have high powered careers and little free time our romantic nature can take hold unbidden and our minds go wandering even when we do not want them to Sometimes we find ourselves waiting anxiously for a text, replying to something too soon or emailing him too often, even though we know this is a bad idea. Now change the scenarioyou have a number of interesting sounding guys that you have met, exchanged emails with or chatted to. Online dating is a perfect way to achieve this as it provides an ideal environment to meet with many more prospective dates than would be possible otherwise. You dont have to meet with everyone you flirt with but just having contact with more than one prospective partner takes all the pressure off just one guy working out. You won’t spend all your time daydreaming about him because there are several other possible contenders for your heart, your time and most importantly your mind! Being in this situation will allow you to be more objective about the guys involved which is important for any long term relationship. You can compare and contrast their respective qualities and the way you interact without feeling pressure for just one to work out. This strategy also makes you a little more elusive which will actually highlight your attractiveness to all the guys involved and makes you appear confident and desirable, which will only make him want you more of course! The key to this dating strategy is to be honest and upfront, dont pretend you are being exclusive when your not. And obviously reserve this for the early stages of dating before exclusivity becomes appropriate! Guys will have no problem with this dating strategy and it may just help you find the man of your dreams! So why not give it a go and see if it works for you?
